2nd Yade hackathon

The second Yade Hackathon took place in Amsterdam, Netherlands on the 16th and 17th of July, 2026. Thanks to the local organization of Robert Caulk and to the financial support of the Aqua division of INRAE French research institute, up to 9 developers joined on site and remotely to discuss and code YADE features.

Aligned with modern trends, a significant share of the discussions devoted to the possible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for helping users to define YADE simulations scripts. Amsterdam temperatures were actually cool enough on those days such that global warming was out of the picture anyway.

Physics-based discussions also took place concerning the various YADE implementations of contact models with a visco-elastic component; as well as about the numerical (so-called “Cundall”) damping, which is now absent from any YADE simulation by default.

Once all corresponding gitlab.com “merge request” (MR) processes will complete (e.g., MR 1190, MR 1194, MR 1195) and thanks also to an improved on-line documentation (MR 1196), we hope this will eventually benefit every YADE user !
